The Alpha Phi Chapter Fuels Wellness on Their Campus
For the women of the Alpha Phi Chapter at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, wellness isn’t just a worthy goal in itself. It is also an opportunity for the chapter to engage their campus peers and make a positive impact for women in their community.
In April, the chapter held its first annual Women’s Wellness Week. The event was run by Co-directors of Philanthropy Marissa Brown and Amy Bassista. It included a 5K, a kickball tournament, yoga, handing out lollipops with motivational phrases, and other activities that directly tie to the Sorority’s Women’s Wellness Initiative. It also included a clothing drive and fundraiser for the Sorority’s National Service Partner, Dress for Success®.
“Wellness is an important issue for us,” says Marissa. “It means a lot to us all personally, so we were excited to promote it on campus as well. Amy and I managed it, but the whole chapter took part. Everyone helped.”
Other sororities, fraternities, and student organizations also participated – fielding teams in the kickball tournament, racing in the 5K, and doing a “downward dog” in the Quad.
“We wanted to make our mark on campus and we certainly did that,” recalls Amy. “It was a real opportunity to build our presence with many different student groups, not just fraternities and sororities. It was really cool.”
As part of Women’s Wellness Week, the Alpha Phi Chapter also hosted a Dress for Success clothing drive in the Student Union. They raised funds for the organization through a bake sale and registration fees for the 5K and kickball tournament. All told, they raised more than $1,400.
“This was all for our nearby Dress for Success affiliate in Allentown, Pennsylvania,” says Marissa. “It was exciting to drop those resources off with them and help the women they serve!”
The women of Alpha Phi are looking forward to next year’s event, and encourage other Alpha Sigma Tau chapters to follow suit.
“Do it,” encourages Amy. “It’s easier than you think because there are so many wellness activities people can get excited about. We found that when we gave people the opportunity to participate, they were motivated on their own to do it.”
