Voting Delegate Information

Sisters and delegates gather at National Convention to make important business decisions that influence the Sorority’s future. We discuss proposed amendments to Alpha Sigma Tau’s governing documents and elect our National Council and Nominations Committee. Because the outcomes of these pieces of business have the ability to impact the Sorority for generations to come, it’s important that every voting delegate is prepared to fulfill their delegate duties.

The Voting Body

The following positions or entities are afforded a vote at Convention:

  • Collegiate chapters in good standing
  • Chapter Advisory Boards (regardless of chapter’s standing)
  • Alumnae chapters or associations in good standing
  • Each volunteer classified as Volunteer Personnel
  • Panhellenic Support Team volunteers
  • Standing Committee Chairs
  • National Council members
  • Past National Presidents

Reviewing Business in Advance

It’s imperative that all voting delegates review all points of business in advance of Convention. If you’re voting on behalf of a chapter, keep in mind that while you may discuss your chapter’s stance on certain pieces of business, amendments made from the floor might change the motion completely. If this happens, you’ll need to use the information you have to make the best decision for Alpha Sigma Tau. The best thing you can do is to prepare as much as possible now.

Alpha Sigma Tau Learning Lounge courses to help you prepare for what to expect at Convention will be available soon!

What to Expect as a Voting Delegate

Here are a few things to expect if you’re a qualified voting delegate:

  • Collegiate chapters on probation are ineligible to vote at Convention. If chapters on financial probation fulfill outstanding financial obligations prior to Convention, they will be permitted a vote.
  • Soon, alumnae chapters and associations will receive a request for reports. This information will be used to determine if the alumnae group is eligible to vote.
  • Voting is completed electronically. Voting delegates will be provided with a voting device upon on-site check-in and tutorials and a practice session prior to the first vote.
  • All Sorority business is conducted using parliamentary procedure. A parliamentary procedure reference sheet will also be available in the Convention app.
