Ferne Shumate Phipps Scholarship

The Ferne Shumate Phipps Scholarship is named in honor of Ferne Shumate Phipps (Omicron 1933/Concord). This award is reserved for a member involved in the study of education.

About Ferne Shumate Phipps

Ferne graduated from Concord College (now Concord University), where she joined Alpha Sigma Tau and was actively involved in the College Panhellenic Association. Ferne’s Alpha Sigma Tau Badge remains on display at Headquarters. Outside of sorority involvement, she was an active member of First Baptist Church where she was a deaconess and circle president.

Professionally, Ferne taught middle and high school throughout her home state of West Virginia for 41 years.

In 2003, Ferne passed away at the age of 88, but her legacy lives on through her loved ones and contributions to Alpha Sigma Tau via this scholarship.
