One Assault is One Too Many

Alpha Sigma Tau is part of the largest collegiate women’s leadership advocacy group in the country.

As a member of the National Panhellenic Conference, we are part of a combined membership base of more than 400,000 female college students.

Sexual violence in any form, in any setting is unacceptable.

Based on reporting data, women are overwhelmingly the predominant victims of sexual assaults. Alpha Sigma Tau believes in supporting all women, particularly victims of heinous crimes such as sexual violence.

How is Alpha Sigma Tau a part of enhancing campus safety, victim support and advocacy, and swift justice for sexual violence offenders?

Alpha Sigma Tau’s involvement in the Safe Campus Coalition, through our membership in NPC, is an important safeguard to ensure our voice is heard to help shape laws and policies that will impact our organization, our chapters, and our members.

The Safe Campus Coalition is a joint effort of the National Panhellenic Conference, North American Interfraternity Conference, and other organizations committed to ensuring safe campuses for all students. The Safe Campus Coalition is developing a legislative agenda that will attempt to ensure student safety on campuses nationwide.

Alpha Sigma Tau believes in Supporting Women 

• Alpha Sigma Tau believes in granting power back to victims of sexual assault.
• Alpha Sigma Tau believes a victim of sexual assault should be able to safely report her experience without the threat of repercussion against her or his organization.
• Alpha Sigma Tau believes any adjudication process in place should be swift and just to protect the victim from additional harm.
• Alpha Sigma Tau believes its members and volunteers must have the confidence that there is infrastructure in our communities that will appropriately and consistently handle reports of sexual violence.

Alpha Sigma Tau promotes active Leadership in our communities

• Alpha Sigma Tau believes in the value of Respect, which we define as the highest level of esteem for the worth of ourselves, our sisters, our peers, our community, our history, our future, and our values.
• Alpha Sigma Tau believes in promoting active leadership by encouraging appropriate forms of civic engagement and exercising our rights to petition our government to make our communities a better place in which to live.

Alpha Sigma Tau believes in Supporting Institutions of Higher Education 

• Alpha Sigma Tau believes every college and university campus deserves a high level of support to promote both sexual violence education and prevention services as well as victim support.

What’s next?

Sorority representatives will be involved in lobbying efforts in Washington D.C. on April 29, 2015, to advocate for safe living and learning environments for our members. Through continued support of the Safe Campus Coalition, our relationship with the Fraternal Government Relations Coalition, and our membership in the NPC, the Sorority will continue to advance the support of women on our campuses and in our communities.
