What is emotional intelligence?

Emotions are present in everything you think, do, and say daily on the job, in your career, and throughout your life. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is how you handle yourself and others.

After the Excel cohort, participants can expect to:

  • Communicate more effectively
  • Handle stress and conflict productively
  • Be a better team member
  • Navigate change more effectively

Meet our 2025 Cohort

Highlights from AΣΤ Excel in 2025!

On July 12, a group of collegiate and alumnae Sisters participated in AΣΤ Excel, a leadership development program focused on emotional intelligence (EQ). The in-person program was facilitated by Jenni Kemmery (Delta 1995/IUP), and the cohort will continue to meet virtually throughout the year.

The in-person daylong Mastering Emotional Intelligence Level 1 program was held on Saturday. Attendees focused on the four areas of EQ:

  • Self-awareness: your ability to accurately perceive your emotions in the moment and understand your tendencies across situations
  • Self-management: your ability to manage yourself to control the impulses and immediate emotional reactions
  • Social awareness: your ability to recognize the emotions of the people around you
  • Relationship management: your ability to be aware of the social factors that are influencing the dynamics in the room

On Saturday evening, Sisters celebrated their day of learning with a reception at Alpha Sigma Tau’s Headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, where attendees browsed the Sorority’s archives.

People who develop their EQ communicate more effectively, handle stress and conflict productively, are better team players, can navigate change, and perform at a higher level. Improving EQs helps our Sisters become better leaders and build stronger relationships.

The Sorority partners with TalentSmart, a recognized leader in emotional intelligence training and education, to deliver their Mastering Emotional Intelligence Level 1 program.

This cohort-style group attended a virtual live session in June hosted by TalentSmarts, a recognized leader in emotional intelligence training and education. The group continued their development in the months following by meeting in small groups and discussing their personal progress.
