Celebrating Women’s History Month

Council Connections – March 2017

By National Vice President Sara Brown, Gamma Pi (Lycoming College)

All across the country, March is celebrated as Women’s History Month. During the entire month, we celebrate the accomplishments and contributions made by women throughout our country’s history. I often find myself reflecting on the countless women who made their mark on history and cleared the path for the rest of us.

Alice Paul & Alva Belmont (Nov. 17 1923)

To celebrate Women’s History Month, I recently visited the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument in my home city of Washington, D.C. Named after women’s rights activists Alice Paul and Alva Belmont, the monument was the home of the National Woman’s Party for almost 90 years and was considered the epicenter of the fight for women’s rights and equality.

Once I stepped inside the house, I realized that I was walking in the same halls and rooms of so many women who came before me. The many women who fought hard to ensure that future generations would have the opportunities and equal rights that they had only dreamed of.

All of the women who convened in that house succeeded because they weren’t afraid to define excellence and empower fellow women to fight for equal rights. They actively created opportunities to excel and worked tirelessly to achieve their goals. I was so overwhelmed by the history and the importance of this national monument right in the city.

During my visit, I found myself thinking of Alpha Sigma Tau and the courage and tenacity it took for our Founders to create a place for women to assemble and enrich each other’s lives. They wanted women to have the ability to come together and empower each other and celebrate our special Sisterhood. During this Women’s History Month, we celebrate all of the women who have made an impact and came before us to courageously pave the road for our future.

Alpha Sigma Tau continues this incredibly important work of envisioning a better future for women by empowering women to excel in life.  We also invest in women by instilling the skills necessary to navigate life and inspire our members to enrich their own lives and the lives of others. That is the power of Alpha Sigma Tau and our Sisterhood.

During this Women’s History Month, I encourage you to take advantage of all that Alpha Sigma Tau has to offer in all of your pursuits. The Sorority gives us the courage and skills to pursue our dreams and enrich everyone’s lives. Because of this great Sorority, you’ll be ready to make your mark in this world too.
