Council Connections – May 2015
Summer is an Opportunity for New Beginnings, Small and Large
By Beth Carney Ebberman, Phi (National Vice President)

June signals the beginning of summer – three months of fun and sun for many of us! Summer is also an opportunity for new beginnings, large and small. Some new beginnings may be as simple as a new hairstyle or color for the summer. But June is also a month associated with big beginnings, like graduations and weddings! Many of our women will be starting anew, graduating and moving on to new jobs or new opportunities such graduate, medical, or law school. More of our women will be starting their alumnae experience.
First up, some Chapter Advisory Board members will be fresh off of Advisor Academy in Pittsburgh, held at the end of May. This may be a new beginning for them as advisors. Advisor Academy will give them the opportunity to connect with their fellow advisors and learn from the sessions, as well as each other.
Later in June, collegiate chapter officers will be attending Officer Academy in Indianapolis. Here, they will have new beginnings as officers, learning the skills needed for success as Sorority leaders. Officer Academy offers opportunities for learning skills that will also translate into other parts of their daily lives. They will also have time to connect with their Sisters from across the country. Remember ladies, your best ideas will probably come from your Sisters!
At the same time as Officer Academy, other Sisters will be attending Recruitment Boot Camp. Those participants will learn the skills to put together an action plan for successful member recruitment. This may signal a new beginning for their chapter, and bring them closer together!
So, during the month of June while you’re lying on the beach getting some sun, relaxing at the pool, or working that lousy summer job, please keep in mind that many of your Sisters will also be having a blast working for the success of Alpha Sigma Tau!
One last thing: June 21 is Father’s Day. Be sure to wish your dad a Happy Father’s Day! Take some time to talk to your dad on Father’s Day and tell him how much you love and appreciate him. Also, have a conversation with him about Alpha Sigma Tau. Many times we share our Alpha Sigma Tau stuff with mom, especially if you are a legacy, but we may not share that with our dads. If your dad is anything like mine was, he will worry about his daughter, no matter how old you are. Let your dad know why you joined Alpha Sigma Tau, how happy that choice has made you, and how it has impacted your life. Let him know you’ve made lifelong friendships and that you are in a safe, loving environment with Alpha Sigma Tau.
Happy summer and safe travels to all!
