Alpha Sigma Tau is saddened by the passing of Anna Margaret Young Rhodes, Psi

Alpha Sigma Tau is saddened by the passing of our long-time Sister and national volunteer, Anna Margaret Young Rhodes, Psi.

Anna Margaret Young Rhodes was initiated as an Alpha Sigma Tau on December 15, 1952. She joined the Psi Chapter at what was then Madison College (now James Madison University). She earned a bachelor of science degree in education in 1955 and, in 1960, a master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia. She later earned a second master’s degree from George Washington University. She then went on to a 36-year career as an elementary school teacher, elementary principal, and instructional specialist.

In 1967, she was honored as Virginia’s Teacher of the Year.

She served as Housing Chair, led the Sorority’s fundraising efforts as Headquarters Fund Chair from 1975 to 1976, and was the Sorority’s National Panhellenic Conference Delegate from 1976 to 1978. She was the local Chair of the 19th National Convention (1972) in her adopted hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia. She served on the Board of Trustees for 18 years – from 1990 to 2008 – including as Chair from 1998 to 2006.

Anna Margaret was a local Sorority leader as well, in addition to volunteering with several other civic and educational organizations. Among many other roles, she served as President of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society for women educators and on the Governing Board of the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. Along with Diane Forrest, she co-founded the Norfolk Area Alumnae Association (now Tidewater Area Alumnae Chapter) in Virginia. She also served as President and Panhellenic delegate of the Roanoke and Norfolk area alumnae chapters and served three times as President of the Tidewater Alumnae Panhellenic Association.

Anna Margaret was married for 54 years to Donald H. Rhodes, who served as mayor of Virginia Beach from 1970 to 1972. She is survived by two sons, Donald H. Rhodes, Jr. and his fiancé, Michelle L. Cadogan, Chester Rhodes and his wife Brigid, and four grandchildren, Emma, Isabelle, Don III, and Wyatt.

For her decades of committed service, Anna Margaret was awarded the Mary Louise Doyle Panhellenic Award and was recognized as a Sustainer of Alpha Sigma Tau at the Centennial Convention in 2000 in Birmingham, Alabama.
