Just ask Michelle Zewe, proud alumna and current New Member Advisor of Alpha Tau Chapter at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Last month in Pittsburgh, PA, she joined two dozen of her fellow AΣT Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) members from across the country at Advisor Academy 2015. During this day-long retreat, CAB members learned about how to communicate with the “millennial” generation, how to have “crucial conversations” with collegians and each other, and about best practices on guiding college students to succeed, among many other topics.

“For me, Advisor Academy was about learning to be a better advisor, period,” says Michelle. “I got to meet other advisors from all over, with a wide range of experiences, and we were able to discuss solutions to common issues together. The information we shared was good, varied, and directly related to what we deal with every day as advisors.”

Michelle was especially drawn to Advisor Academy’s open format, where everyone is in the same room together and encouraged to share their own experiences and insights. “I really enjoyed being with the same people all day,” she says. “I got to listen to everyone. We could all engage each other and, as a result, learned and grew together.”

Michelle was drawn to serve on Alpha Tau’s CAB out of a desire to give back to the chapter that she credits with much of her own growth during college. “When you’re in college, you have questions about so many things – so much is brand new,” she says. “You need someone to help guide you. Our advisors were there for us, and I want to be there for today’s collegians.” Michelle also gives back to her chapter and the Sorority as Alumnae Chapter Vice President and Alumnae Historian for the Erie (Pennsylvania) Alumnae Chapter, and as Design Editor for AΣT’s member magazine, The Anchor.

“I can’t encourage Advisor Academy enough,” Michelle says. “I think any CAB member would benefit from the opportunity to engage with your peers and tap into everyone else’s knowledge. Those who don’t attend are really missing out.”

This week, Alpha Sigma Tau will continue its focus on chapter leadership development. From June 18 – 21, the Sorority will run Officer Academy and Recruitment Boot Camp in downtown Indianapolis, IN. Officer Academy equips Chapter Presidents and other Executive Committee officers with the proven skills needed for successful Sorority leadership. Recruitment Boot Camp, which runs concurrently, is a systematic, results-driven approach to recruitment that provides skills training and techniques to significantly grow recruitment within the chapter.
