A Lifelong Commitment to Education: How Kathy Supports Alpha Sigma Tau’s Future Through Scholarships
Kathy Orrison Sharp’s passion for education has been a defining aspect of her life, leading her to support Alpha Sigma Tau in a way that speaks to her heart: by helping reduce student loan debt for Sisters pursuing their dreams. With a B.S. and M.S. in elementary education, plus a Specialist degree in School Administration from Indiana University-Bloomington, Kathy dedicated her career to empowering students. She spent decades in the Indianapolis Public Schools, serving as a teacher, school principal, and central office administrator, before retiring and focusing on new ways to give back.
A proud Alpha Sigma Tau alumna, Kathy treasures her memories from her own college days, where being a member enriched her life in countless ways. “Choosing just one favorite memory is hard,” she shares. “Homecoming was always a highlight, with matching homecoming suits and riding in the parade. But a recent memory stands out—I received my 50-year membership certificate from my alumnae chapter, which I consider a blessing.”
Even though her collegiate days are behind her, Kathy’s dedication to Alpha Sigma Tau has only grown. Through her recently established Kathleen Orrision Sharp Scholarship, which was awarded for the first time in 2023, she’s providing financial support to current collegiate members, helping them reduce the burden of student loan debt. “More than 50% of all college students graduate with student loan debt,” Kathy notes. “Establishing a scholarship may help—even in a small way—to alleviate some of this debt for an Alpha Sigma Tau collegian.” She’s especially grateful for the support of fellow Sisters who have contributed to this fund, sharing her vision of a future where financial barriers don’t stand in the way of educational success.
As a member of the Legacy Society, Kathy has also included the Foundation in her estate plans, ensuring her impact will live on for years to come. Recently, she served on the scholarship selection committee, an experience that reinforced her commitment to Alpha Sigma Tau’s mission. “Reading about our Sisters’ impressive academic pursuits reminded me of the great need many members have,” she says. “Alpha Sigma Tau scholarships can be a pillar of support for these deserving students.”

Her hope is that her legacy will inspire others to consider the impact they can make. For Kathy, supporting Alpha Sigma Tau is not only a way to give back but also a way to ensure that today’s young women have access to the opportunities and support that helped shape her own life.
“I am honored to be able to give back in this way,” Kathy says. “I encourage others to consider how they, too, can make a difference for future Alpha Sigma Tau Sisters. Together, we can empower our Sisters to pursue their dreams, free from the weight of financial worry.”
