Meet an Advisor: Margaret Blackmer Whitehead

When Margaret Blackmer Whitehead (Beta 2012/Central Michigan) stepped into the role of Chapter Advisor for the Beta Chapter at Central Michigan University, the chapter was in a difficult spot, having recently been placed on probation. “If you see opportunities for improvement, it’s important to step up and be part of the solution,” said Margaret. “That’s exactly what motivated me to get involved.”

Working alongside other Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) members, Margaret helped the Beta Chapter bounce back. She guided the new officers and chapter members as they worked hard to overcome obstacles and get off probation. “It was definitely a challenging time, but I’m extremely proud of the progress they’ve made and how they continue to build momentum and learn. Their growth, resilience, and commitment to improvement have been amazing to witness,” she said.

In addition to stepping up for her chapter when they were in need, serving as an advisor gave her an outlet that helped fill her cup beyond being a mom of two and a business professional. Margaret said, “I had such a meaningful experience at Central Michigan, and feel strongly about giving back to the chapter that played such a significant role in shaping who I am today.”

As she lives more than two hours away from campus, she primarily connects with the chapter virtually. “I make it a priority to connect with our Chapter President, and we typically communicate every other day,” Margaret explained. “I also focus on building relationships with new members to ensure they feel supported.” However, she ensures that she attends at least one in-person event each semester.

The balance of virtual/in-person and time management is what Margaret describes as one of the most challenging aspects of advising. She said, “As much as I would love to give even more to the chapter, I also have responsibilities as a mother and in my career. But I’ve found that consistent communication makes a huge difference – encouraging phone calls and taking the time to explain the ‘why’ behind the decision-making have helped strengthen relationships across the board.”

Yet for all the challenges and balances, there is the ultimate reward of supporting Alpha Sigma Tau collegiate members. “So much of what shaped me during college came from my Sorority experience. As an advisor, I get to watch these women grow in confidence, especially in ways that go beyond the classroom,” Margaret explained. “Seeing members step into leadership roles, find their voice, and develop life skills that will carry them beyond college is incredibly rewarding. I truly value being part of their growth and journey.”

For others interested in advising, Margaret highly recommends it, especially if you are already passionate about your collegiate experience and see how you can make a positive impact on the next generation of Sisters. She said, “These women are navigating a different generation and experience, but the core values of our Sisterhood remain the same. It’s an opportunity to give back to something that once meant so much to you while making a real difference.”

Thank you to Margaret and all the advisors who help our collegiate women grow, learn, and improve daily!
