A little bit about us…
Alpha Sigma Tau (or AST or Alpha Tau for short) was established in 1899 at Michigan State Normal College, now known as Eastern Michigan University.
We originally began as a sorority for teachers and only were at schools for teachers, but once we joined the National Panhellenic Conference in 1951, we expanded to non-teacher colleges across the country!
Like many organizations at Iona, we have some symbols that are important to our members and our identity as a Sisterhood. Here are just a few:
- SYMBOL: Anchor
- COLORS: Emerald Green & Gold
- FLOWER: Yellow Rose
- JEWEL: Pearl
- CORE VALUES: Graciousness, Respect, Intellect, Connections, Excellence

An unstoppable network of women—nationally and right here in the Northeast!
With 50% of our chapters in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic regions, Alpha Sigma Taus are all over the East Coast!
Our founding members at Iona will have the opportunity to connect with other undergrad Sisters at New York University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Marist University, and Monmouth University.
And with more than 2,000 alumnae members (Sisters who have graduated in all career fields) within 30 miles of campus, our members at Iona will have a vast professional network nearby!
Where women belong
Finding your place can make all the difference in your college experience. Alpha Sigma Tau offers a supportive sisterhood where women build lifelong friendships, grow together, and make the most of their time on campus.
Iona Alpha Sigma Taus will be surrounded by women who celebrate their successes, support one another through challenges, and make every moment more meaningful.
Whether it’s study sessions, late-night talks, or cheering each other on at campus events, sisterhood becomes part of your everyday life.
Alpha Sigma Tau isn’t just a sorority—it’s a space where women at Iona will create something remarkable and leave a lasting impact both on campus and in the Alpha Sigma Tau legacy.

Where women empower women
When women uplift one another, real change happens.

Our National Philanthropy and Service Partners
Through our national philanthropy, the Women’s Wellness Initiative, Alpha Sigma Tau supports organizations that promote women’s well-being across six areas of wellness—physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, and occupational.
We’re proud to partner with Dress for Success and Girls Who Code, giving our members the opportunity to support women’s empowerment on both national and international stages. Additionally, our chapters have the flexibility to support local women-focused organizations, ensuring that our impact is both broad and meaningful.
Here are some ways our members enjoy giving back:
Empowerment also means supporting each other’s mental health.
Through Name Your Story, our online, video-based course, members learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of common mental health challenges facing college students. The course also provides training on how to discuss these experiences with one another and prioritize self-care.
Each semester, we host a live webinar with Dr. Lauren Cook on a relevant mental health topic, giving our members the chance to learn directly from an expert. Dr. Cook has served as a keynote speaker at our National Convention and led live programming for our chapters, bringing valuable insights to our entire campus community.
